Job Growth

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Data, the employment of data scientists is projected to grow 35 percent from 2022 to 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations.

About 17,700 openings for data scientists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

Salary Ranges

The BLS reports the median annual salary for data scientists was $103,500 in May 2022. The median annual wage for data scientists was $103,500 in May 2022. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $58,510, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $174,790.

Curriculum

Core courses include data visualization, data mining, machine learning, statistics, and database systems. Students learn to clean, integrate, and analyze complex data to gain actionable insights and tell data-driven stories. Elective tracks allow students to specialize in fields like Big Data Analytics, Econometrics, or Autonomous Systems. In the final capstone course, students apply their skills to solve a real challenge for a company or nonprofit. Recent projects include optimizing supply chain management for a retailer, identifying risk factors for hospital readmissions, and designing a recommendation system for an online education platform.

Concentrations in Data Science

Students work with a faculty adviser to create a unique curriculum that fits their interests. This can be a great option for students who are not sure what they want to study, or who want to explore a variety of subjects. Students can design their own four-course concentration, outside of the ones offered, within the major based on their personal academic and professional pursuits. This unique combination of courses works in concert with other co- and extra-curricular activities, including research experiences, internships, and a wide variety of opportunities in our student organizations. Advanced Topics offers the student the flexibility in curriculum choices to grow with their changing interests as they look forward to graduation, graduate school, and their professional endeavors.

Students in Big Data Analytics learn to collect, manage, and optimize large-scale structured and unstructured data sets to facilitate information and decision-making. Students in Big Data Analytics develop a strong foundation in essential programming skills, quantitative analysis, and hardware and software solutions for facilitating effective use of big data.

Intelligent Mobility and Autonomous Systems uses data and technology to connect people, places, and goods across all transportation modes. Growth in intelligent mobility will transform the way people travel, interact with their environment, and connect goods and services.

Quantitative Economics and Econometrics focuses on quantitative analysis and rigorous modeling of economic phenomena. This includes analysis of individual and firm decisions when data is messy, incomplete, or otherwise imperfect, analysis of strategic situations, and analysis of market outcomes and trends. Training in Quantitative Economics and Econometrics hones critical reasoning skills and prepares students for analytical careers or for graduate or professional study.
