The Florida Polytechnic University campus rolled out the red carpet for students’ families and loved ones during the annual Phoenix Family Day on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Hundreds of people attended the event, exploring campus, engaging in hands-on activities, and immersing themselves in Florida Poly’s unique culture. The day also celebrated Solaris, the University’s larger-than-life mascot, with a birthday bash complete with sweet treats and fun.

“It’s an awesome campus. I love it,” said Wayne Small, whose grandson, Jack Everhart, is a freshman majoring in computer science.

“I’m a database administrator at Lockheed Martin and I appreciate that my grandson is able to follow in my footsteps here,” Small said. “I love the fact that we actually have a university in Florida dedicated to STEM.”

Jack Everhart, from St. Petersburg, Florida, said he was happy to share his student experience with his family.

“I’m happy they’re able to come here and see where I live and hear Dr. Stephenson speak about future plans for the school,” he said.

Dr. Devin Stephenson, Florida Poly’s president, addressed the families with an engaging speech in the Barnett Applied Research Center during the event.

“Today is a special occasion as we gather to celebrate the achievements and the aspirations of your students,” he said. “Their ambition, drive and potential are the forces that propel this University forward.”

Stephenson’s address outlined the institution’s focus, priorities and plans.

“Every decision we make, every resource we allocate and every initiative we launch is focused on empowering your student to thrive,” he said. “At this University, we are small enough to know their name, but we are big enough to shape their future.”

The address capped off a successful day for Alejandro Sosa, whose daughter, Gabriela Sosa, is a freshman majoring in computer science.

“This gives me confidence that my daughter has made a good choice coming to Florida Poly,” he said.
