  1. Where were you born? On the Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan. My father was in the Air Force at the time.
  2. Where did you go to high school? I graduated from Glens Falls High School in Glens Falls, New York in 2004.
  3. Were you in any organizations in high school? I ran track and cross-country.
  4. Where did you go to college? I graduated from Oneonta State University in Oneonta, New York.
  5. What did you study? I have a B.S. in English with a concentration in literature.
  6. When did you graduate? 2009
  7. Any hobbies? I like to read, run, hike, and watch Jeopardy.
  8. Any pets? We don’t have space for dogs, so I have two cats, Gladys and Faye.
  9. What’s your favorite sports team? Boston Red Sox
  10. What do you like to do in your spare time? I like to read and watch baseball.
  11. What made you want to be a recruiter for Florida Poly? I really liked the idea of being with a university from its bare bones, from the ground up, and the role that FL Poly will play in the community will be huge – it’s a great opportunity to help students earn an education in the STEM fields that drive both cultural innovation and the local and national economies.
  12. What do you like about working at Florida Poly so far? There’s a great atmosphere of constant innovation and idea sharing, with the common thread always being the students’ benefit and best interest. It’s an exciting environment.
  13. What do you look forward to as you work with Florida Poly? Getting out in the community – interacting with and getting to know our future students as they begin what will be a really exciting, enriching journey, for both the student and for the university.
Session Details

This session will demonstrate that practical risk management is for everyone, regardless of a formal program. Attendees will learn actionable and simple strategies that are easy to implement, enabling them to start immediately by focusing on their top risks to build greater operational resilience and ensure the sustained success of their auxiliary enterprises.

Presenter Profile

Michelle Powell serves as the pioneering Risk Manager at Florida Polytechnic University, the state’s sole 100% STEM-dedicated institution. Having been with the university for nearly 11 years, Michelle transitioned from a leadership role in Admissions in October 2023 to establish and evolve the risk management function from the ground up. In this solo capacity, Michelle builds robust frameworks for our dynamic, young university, overseeing our insurance portfolio, consulting on third-party and event risks, and developing critical campus-wide training programs. Michelle has obtained the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) Enterprise Risk Management certificate and the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designations. Her distinct background in mathematics and engineering, combined with extensive higher education leadership, brings an analytical and strategic approach enhancing the institution’s resilience.
