The Commission for Public Higher Education (CPHE) announced today that its Board of Directors has voted to grant accreditation to Florida Polytechnic University, marking the Commission’s first accreditation decision since its founding in 2025.
The historic decision represents a significant milestone for CPHE, the nation’s first institutional accreditor designed exclusively for public higher education. It also marks the culmination of the Commission’s inaugural institutional review process and an important step forward in its mission to establish a rigorous, efficient, and outcomes-based approach to accreditation that recognizes the unique missions of public colleges and universities.
“When CPHE was established, we set out to build a new approach to accreditation specifically designed to meet the needs of public higher education,” said Mark Becker, Ph.D., Chair of the CPHE Board of Directors. “This decision represents the realization of that vision and an important milestone in the Commission’s development. We congratulate Florida Polytechnic University on this achievement and commend its leadership, faculty, and staff for their commitment to institutional excellence and student success.”
Florida Polytechnic University was the first institution to complete a site visit under CPHE’s accreditation process, hosting a Peer Review Team on August 5–6, 2026. During the visit, experienced higher education leaders conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the University’s governance, academic quality, student success, financial sustainability, institutional effectiveness, and continuous improvement efforts.
Following the site visit, the CPHE Peer Review Team completed its evaluation and submitted its findings to the Commission’s Accreditation Advisory Committee, which reviewed the team’s report and developed a recommendation for accreditation action. CPHE executives authored a recommendation as well. The CPHE Board of Directors subsequently considered these recommendations and made the final accreditation decision in accordance with the Commission’s established standards, policies, and peer-review procedures. “This is a defining moment for CPHE and an important demonstration of what our approach to accreditation can accomplish,” said Cameron Howell, Ph.D., President and CEO of CPHE. “From the beginning, our goal has been to create a process that maintains rigorous standards while reducing unnecessary administrative burdens, placing greater emphasis on meaningful student outcomes. Florida Polytechnic University’s participation in our inaugural review process has been instrumental in bringing that vision to life, and we are grateful for the University’s leadership and partnership.”
Florida Polytechnic University, located in Lakeland, Florida, is a public institution focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Its participation in CPHE’s inaugural accreditation process reflects its commitment to institutional innovation, continuous improvement, and preparing students for success in a rapidly evolving workforce.
“Earning accreditation from CPHE as its first institution is a tremendous honor and a historic achievement for Florida Polytechnic University,” said Dr. Devin Stephenson, president of Florida Poly. “This milestone reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff, and leadership to delivering an exceptional STEM education and preparing our students for meaningful careers. We are honored to have helped pioneer CPHE’s new approach to accreditation, and we look forward to continuing our commitment to innovation, accountability, and student success.”
CPHE was established in 2025 through the collaboration of public university systems seeking to advance an accreditation model centered on institutional quality, transparency, efficiency, and student outcomes. The Commission’s first accreditation decision represents an important step in translating that vision into practice as CPHE continues its work with public institutions across the country. Similarly, this first decision is pivotal to CPHE’s plans to apply to the U.S. Department of Education for recognition as an accrediting agency with authority to determine institutions’ eligibility to receive federal financial aid dollars.
