Preparation is the key to making a great impression and getting results at any on-campus career fair, internship fair, or networking event. The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel—and the better impression you’ll make. Start your preparation early so you can walk in ready to shine.

Follow these tips to set yourself up for success:

Before the Fair

  • Research the companies. Log into Handshake to see who’s attending. Learn about their mission, products, and job opportunities.
  • Plan your approach. Decide which employers you want to meet and what you want to say about yourself, your skills, and the value you bring.
  • Polish your resume. Review it for clarity and impact. Schedule an appointment with Career Services at careerservices@floridapoly.edu to ensure it stands out.
  • Prepare your talking points. Think about key experiences, projects, and skills you want to highlight.

At the Fair

  • Dress for success. Wear professional business attire—such as a blazer, dress pants or skirt, professional dress, or suit—and ensure clothes are clean and pressed.
  • Use confident body language. Make eye contact, smile, and offer a firm handshake to show you’re engaged and professional.
  • Deliver your elevator pitch. Practice a clear, concise introduction about who you are, what you do, and what you’re seeking.
  • Engage fully. Ask thoughtful questions, share relevant experiences, and listen actively.
  • Network widely. Speak with as many employers as possible without rushing conversations.
  • Exchange contact information. Offer your resume and collect business cards to make follow-up easier.

After the Fair

  • Follow up promptly. Send a thank-you email within 24–48 hours, attaching your resume and referencing something you discussed.
  • Connect on LinkedIn. Send a personalized connection request to recruiters you met.
  • Leverage your contacts. Mention your fair interaction in cover letters when applying to their companies.
  • Stay in touch. Periodically reconnect via LinkedIn or email to keep the relationship active.
