The B.S. in Environmental Engineering at Florida Polytechnic University applies principles from all of the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, geology, and biology) to help you tackle interconnected challenges as they relate to water, energy, air quality, and related fields. Environmental engineers advance the science and technology of air quality, water quality, water resources, housing and other built environments, greenspace development, and the protection of plants, animals and their habitats. Throughout the world, environmental engineers play a key role in defining the future of sustainable cities and communities, and reimagining systems that protect both the planet and the well-being of all people. To succeed as an environmental engineer, you will need an aptitude for mathematics and science, an abiding interest in protecting the natural environment and public health, and high motivation to study and prepare for environmental engineering practice.
Florida Poly’s B.S. in Environmental Engineering provides a comprehensive curriculum grounded in courses in advanced mathematics, chemistry, and physics, as well as engineering. You will gain a broad introduction to all the sciences, along with their application to environmental engineering. The program prepares you to address some of the greatest collective challenges of our time. Foundational courses in the humanities and social sciences help to give you a broad view of the interaction of humans with the environment, and to measure the short and long-term social, environmental and economic aspects and impacts into sustainable engineering solutions. Hands-on laboratories and/or project-based learning are incorporated into each year of the Environmental Engineering curriculum. You will gain experience with engineering computer software and a range of laboratory tools as you progress toward upper-level coursework and a yearlong senior capstone project.
Modern Techniques in Sustainability
Florida Polytechnic University's BS in Environmental Engineering with a concentration in Modern Techniques in Sustainability is truly unique and leverages the University’s strengths in data science, sensors and instrumentation. You will learn how new sensing systems can be applied to better understand and model the environment and how new approaches to data analytics can be employed to provide faster and more accurate feedback, resulting in innovative solutions to long-standing challenges. Florida Polytechnique Environmental Engineers in this concentration will provide insights and approaches that will drive investment and project planning among city planners, civil engineers, environmental engineers, architects, developers, and construction managers charged with assessing the economic, environmental, and social implications of sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure.
Florida Polytechnic University's BS in Environmental Engineering with a concentration in Water prepares you for one of the most varied and in-demand areas of Environmental Engineering. You will gain the knowledge and tools for developing and managing sustainable, resilient water resources and infrastructure. Study, research and application in this concentration will include planning, design, operation, and management of surface and ground water systems, preservation and enhancement of the natural river and watershed environment, design and construction of water control facilities, and conservation of water resources.
Capstone: Where it Comes Together
Each Florida Poly senior joins a Capstone Design team of (three to five students) of a single discipline (mechanical engineering) or mixed disciplines (engineering, computer science, data science, etc.) to complete a year-long, industry sponsored project. Capstone culminates with a year-end gathering of sponsors and project teams, and the presentation of final ‘beta’ level prototypes. Past Capstone Design projects have led to job offers from sponsoring companies.
A team of computer science and mechanical engineering students are helping to solve the problem of how best to conduct pressure vessel testing to ensure material lifetime in cold operating environments. Working with Florida water filtration company Paragon Water, the Pressure Vessel Testing capstone team established a tensile testing procedure for plastic samples according to ASTM standards, developed a heated or cooled testing environment and established a data interpretation method for engineering stress analysis software (ANSYS) input.
Florida Polytechnic University invites you to develop both people and technology skills through a variety of undergraduate research opportunities and student organizations: student chapters of professional groups (American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Society of Women Engineers and National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)); academic clubs (Math Club, Modeling and Simulation Club; and social groups (Latin American Student Association, Variety Gaming Tournament Club).
As a student in the BS in Environmental Engineering program, you will have the chance to work alongside mentors, professors and peers in Florida Poly’s two physics labs, biology, and chemistry labs, plus additional wet and dry labs key to natural science and environmental engineering:

Florida Poly’s Purple Fire Robotics Club (45 members strong) took home the Judges Award at the 2018 VEX Robotics World Championship and will next compete in the 2019 SoutheastCon “First 50…Next 50” Hardware Competition in Huntsville, Alabama.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that demand for environmental engineers will grow faster than the national average for all occupations between 2012 and 2022, increasing by 15 percent. In Florida, environmental engineering employment growth is projected to grow 18.5% between 2016 and 2026
Environmental engineering graduates may acquire positions in industry, consultancy, utilities, regulatory agencies, nonprofits, governmental agencies and nongovernmental organizations. You will work alongside sustainability coordinators, civil and mechanical engineers, architects, developers, and construction managers.

He’s a specialist in the fast-emerging field of sustainable polymer and composite material production, use and re-use. Every industry — automotive, electronics, semiconductor, aerospace, defense, energy — seeks material that can be lighter, stronger and more versatile. Dr. Soltani explores how strong, lightweight materials can be fabricated in the most sustainable way, from minimizing energy consumption during production, to post processing to eliminate plastic waste when the materials are disposed of.
Director of Beneficiation and Mining
He’s done groundbreaking research on photo-chemical degradation and destruction of cyanide and other contaminants produced by mining. In states like Florida, with its rich history of phosphate mining, land reclamation raises challenges of erosion prevention, soil stabilization, water contamination, and controlling air emissions of metals and ground-based radiation.
