About
Dr. Muhammad R. Abid is an associate professor of computer science at Florida Polytechnic University, where he has been a faculty member since 2016. Prior to his promotion to associate professor in 2024, he served as an assistant professor from 2016 to 2024. He has over 15 years of experience across academia, research, industry and consultancy.
Abid earned his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Ottawa, Canada, where his doctoral research focused on dynamic hand gesture recognition for human–computer and human–robot interaction. He also holds two master’s degrees in computer science and a bachelor’s degree in computer science.
His research interests include computer vision, medical image analysis, deep learning, pattern recognition, and human-computer/robot interaction, with applications in healthcare, cybersecurity, autonomous systems and intelligent environments. His recent research includes deep learning–based glaucoma detection, multimodal large language models for medical diagnostics, face liveness detection, and context-aware information extraction for cybersecurity.
He is the founder and faculty supervisor of the AI & Robotic Vision Research Club (AIRVRC), an initiative he established to actively engage students in hands-on research and project-based learning. The club, which had more than 33 active student members in Spring 2026, works on research and applied projects in artificial intelligence, computer vision, robotics, and medical imaging.
In addition to teaching and research, Abid is actively involved in curriculum development, ABET accreditation, graduate studies, and academic assessment, contributing to the continuous improvement of computer science programs at Florida Poly.

This session will demonstrate that practical risk management is for everyone, regardless of a formal program. Attendees will learn actionable and simple strategies that are easy to implement, enabling them to start immediately by focusing on their top risks to build greater operational resilience and ensure the sustained success of their auxiliary enterprises.
Michelle Powell serves as the pioneering Risk Manager at Florida Polytechnic University, the state’s sole 100% STEM-dedicated institution. Having been with the university for nearly 11 years, Michelle transitioned from a leadership role in Admissions in October 2023 to establish and evolve the risk management function from the ground up. In this solo capacity, Michelle builds robust frameworks for our dynamic, young university, overseeing our insurance portfolio, consulting on third-party and event risks, and developing critical campus-wide training programs. Michelle has obtained the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) Enterprise Risk Management certificate and the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designations. Her distinct background in mathematics and engineering, combined with extensive higher education leadership, brings an analytical and strategic approach enhancing the institution’s resilience.
