The Commission for Public Higher Education (CPHE), a nascent institutional accreditor, today announced the successful completion of its inaugural site visit at Florida Polytechnic University on Aug. 5-6, marking a historic milestone for both organizations. The visit was the first conducted by CPHE, making Florida Poly the first institution to advance through this critical phase of the Commission’s accreditation process.
The milestone reflects years of planning and collaboration to establish a new model of institutional accreditation designed exclusively for public colleges and universities. As the nation’s first institutional accreditor dedicated solely to public higher education, CPHE was founded to provide a mission-centered system of peer review that recognizes the unique role that public institutions play in serving students, communities, and states. CPHE innovates accreditation processes for public colleges and universities, introducing efficiencies that decrease unnecessary costs and labor while maintaining rigor.
During the visit, a CPHE Peer Review Team comprised of experienced leaders from public higher education and chaired by Dr. Samara Firebaugh, provost of the U.S. Naval Academy, conducted a comprehensive evaluation of Florida Poly in accordance with CPHE’s Accreditation Standards and Evidentiary Guidance. The team met with the Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, institutional leadership, faculty, staff, and students, while reviewing evidence related to governance, academic quality, student success, financial sustainability, institutional effectiveness, and continuous improvement.

The site visit is a cornerstone of CPHE’s accreditation process, providing an opportunity for an independent team of peer reviewers to evaluate an institution’s alignment with the Commission’s standards while recognizing institutional strengths and identifying opportunities for continued improvement. Consistent with the principles of peer review, the evaluation was conducted by accomplished higher education leaders with expertise spanning governance, academic affairs, finance, student success, and institutional effectiveness.

Following the site visit, the CPHE Peer Review Team will finalize its report and recommendations for consideration by CPHE’s Board of Directors. The Board is expected to consider Florida Poly ‘s accreditation status at its October 2026 meeting, in accordance with the Commission’s established policies and procedures.

As CPHE continues to work with institutions across the country, the successful completion of its first site visit marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Commission’s mission to strengthen public higher education through rigorous, mission-centered accreditation. CPHE expects to submit an application for recognition to the U.S. Department of Education in November 2026, and CPHE expects to be eligible for recognition by mid-July 2027.
