FIPR Institute Assists Odyssey Marine Exploration in Underwater Phosphorite Study

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute at Florida Polytechnic University recently assisted Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc. (Nasdaq:OMEX), a pioneer in deep-ocean mineral exploration, in testing and measuring phosphorite core samples from an underwater deposit.

Researchers at FIPR conducted metallurgical testing and chemical analysis for an independent technical report on the Oceanica deposit. They analyzed a total of 760 core samples for the Odyssey Marine Exploration study of an offshore mineral deposit. The FIPR Institute is a not-for-profit phosphate and fertilizer research center with a staff of biologists, engineers and chemists who support and conduct phosphate-related studies to increase mining and processing efficiency, as well as improve the environment and protect public health.

Odyssey Marine Exploration is engaged in deep-ocean exploration using innovative methods and state-of-the-art technology for shipwreck projects and mineral exploration. According to Odyssey Marine Exploration, the underwater deposit is an “attractive potential sourcing site for fertilizer companies in the Americas, Pacific Rim and Asia.”

Michelle Powell serves as the pioneering Risk Manager at Florida Polytechnic University, the state’s sole 100% STEM-dedicated institution. Having been with the university for nearly 11 years, Michelle transitioned from a leadership role in Admissions in October 2023 to establish and evolve the risk management function from the ground up. In this solo capacity, Michelle builds robust frameworks for our dynamic, young university, overseeing our insurance portfolio, consulting on third-party and event risks, and developing critical campus-wide training programs. Michelle has obtained the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) Enterprise Risk Management certificate and the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designations. Her distinct background in mathematics and engineering, combined with extensive higher education leadership, brings an analytical and strategic approach enhancing the institution’s resilience.
