Florida Poly expands global footprint with new Fulbright Brazil agreement

As Florida Polytechnic University aims to grow its international impact, the all-STEM institution has partnered with the Fulbright Commission Brazil to foster top-quality educational opportunities, strengthening the alliance between the University and the South American country.

The memorandum of understanding paves the way for a new academic collaboration, enabling distinguished Brazilian researchers and scholars to conduct cutting-edge research at Florida Poly, working hand in hand with its students and faculty.

“Our vision is to establish a journey of excellence through impactful bilateral relationships that help drive the state’s economic engine and serve as a gateway to Latin America,” said Dr. Devin Stephenson, president of Florida Poly. “This partnership with Fulbright Brazil not only attracts intellectual capital for applied research and innovation, but also solidifies our commitment to building prestigious international collaborations that benefit our students, faculty, and the global community.”

The new agreement comes at an important time, as the relationship between Florida and Brazil plays a vital role in the state’s economic growth. According to a report from Select Florida, the volume trade between Florida and Brazil reached $22.6 billion in 2022. Additionally, Florida is home to nearly half a million Brazilians.

 

Dr. Luiz V. Loureiro is the executive director of the Fulbright Commission Brazil, which signed a new agreement with Florida Polytechnic University to foster shared academic and research prospects.

Loureiro, executive director of the Fulbright Commission Brazil. “This partnership has boundless potential for incredible success and long-lasting impact.”

In addition to the new agreement with Brazil, Florida Poly has established partnerships with Fulbright organizations in Portugal, Finland, Spain, Italy, Canada, Australia, Luxembourg, and Belgium.

The international Fulbright Program, led by the U.S. Department of State, works with more than 160 nations around the globe to increase educational and cultural exchanges to study, learn, and pursue academic and professional projects. Since its creation in 1946, the program has created learning pathways for more than 400,000 scholars.

Presenter Profile

Michelle Powell serves as the pioneering Risk Manager at Florida Polytechnic University, the state’s sole 100% STEM-dedicated institution. Having been with the university for nearly 11 years, Michelle transitioned from a leadership role in Admissions in October 2023 to establish and evolve the risk management function from the ground up. In this solo capacity, Michelle builds robust frameworks for our dynamic, young university, overseeing our insurance portfolio, consulting on third-party and event risks, and developing critical campus-wide training programs. Michelle has obtained the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) Enterprise Risk Management certificate and the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designations. Her distinct background in mathematics and engineering, combined with extensive higher education leadership, brings an analytical and strategic approach enhancing the institution’s resilience.
