Andrew Sheha, an electrical engineering major at Florida Polytechnic University, recently completed the training program of a lifetime. The sophomore traveled to New York City as one of a handful of select participants for the highly competitive Jane Street IN FOCUS Program.
The immersive one-week experience, which is designed to train and cultivate talent in quantitative finance, took place on Jan 8-13. Jane Street Capital is a global proprietary trading firm with offices in several countries.
Once accepted into the IN-FOCUS Program, Sheha participated in the quantitative trading track, which includes mathematical and financial topics like probability and market structure.
“It was very focused on game theory, the quantitative aspects of training, and the mathematical jungle behind how markets work at a grand scale,” said Sheha, who is from Orlando.
In his cohort of about 20 students, Sheha said he was the only student from Florida in the program. Most other attendees were international students or from prestigious institutions like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and MIT.
“It’s very freeing to be around some of the brightest minds in the world,” he said. “It was great to speak with peers on very quantitatively heavy topics, which are more difficult to discuss in normal conversation.”
Before attending the Jane Street program, Sheha had already amassed significant work and research experience extending back to his high school days at Windermere Preparatory School in Windermere, Florida.
He said he has completed two internships in machine learning, is contributing to research at Stanford University, and teaches computer science with the Microsoft TEALS Program. He also has worked as a quantitative developer and participated in NASA’s L’SPACE Program as a project manager.
With two more years left at Florida Poly, he said he is eager to continue expanding his skillset with other enriching experiences like the Jane Street IN FOCUS Program. He has already accepted an offer for Microsoft’s software engineering internship in Redmond, Washington this summer.
“I think the biggest takeaway is there’s always room to grow and to improve exponentially,” Sheha said.
