October 19, 2018

LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Polytechnic University has reached an agreement with the Australian-American Fulbright Commission (Fulbright Australia) to begin accepting graduate students and professors beginning in the fall of 2019.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment signifying our continued commitment to academic excellence,” said Dr. Terry Parker, Florida Poly’s provost and executive vice president. “Being able to attract some of the brightest tech-minded students and scholars from Australia will have an immeasurable impact on not only their lives, but also Florida Poly students and faculty they will interact with here. It’s what the Fulbright Program is all about.”

Fulbright Australia is the leading scholarship program between Australia and the U.S. and encourages binational collaboration and knowledge-exchange through a program of competitive, merit-based scholarships.

“We’re honored to partner with Florida Polytechnic University,” said Thomas Dougherty, the executive director of the Australian-American Fulbright Commission and a retired U.S. Ambassador. “We look forward to the science, technology, engineering, and math opportunities the university will provide Australian scholars.”

Florida Poly and Australian officials will formalize the agreement at a special ceremony in February 2019 in Canberra, the country’s capital city. Florida Poly already has Fulbright partnerships with Canada, Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg.

The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 to fund the “promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture and science.” It awards approximately 8,000 grants annually and operates in over 160 countries worldwide. To date, three Florida Poly students have received Fulbright scholarships while the University has hosted five Fulbright scholars
