Florida Polytechnic University to Host International Conference on Environmental Technology

LAKELAND, Fla. – For the first time, leaders in academia, industry and government from the United States and India will come together at Florida Polytechnic University to discuss the most advanced research and development of green chemistry, engineering and technologies (GCET).

The GCET-2018 USA-India Conference, also hosted by India’s Panjab University, will be held July 18-19 at the Innovation, Science and Technology Building on Florida Poly’s campus in Lakeland.

“Clean water, air, clean energy and food security are the biggest challenges facing our planet when it comes to the environment,” said Dr. Sesha Srinivasan, professor of physics at Florida Poly and part of the university wide organizing committee. “This conference will address solutions to some of these stringent parameters.”

The keynote speakers and participants include some of the most prominent researchers in green and sustainable technologies from universities in Florida and the nation, as well as from Panjab University. In addition, there will be panel discussions in which industrialists, non-profits, government, faculty and students will discuss international graduate education and research on green chemistry and engineering.

“There is a rising awareness and demand for green chemistry, green materials, green composites and their engineering and technological applications,” said Srinivasan. “This is why this conference is so relevant to today’s environment.”

The event will allow scientists and technologists to generate strategic recommendations for the advancement of an international curriculum focused on green science and technology. There will also be a select group of graduate and undergraduate students from Florida Poly and Panjab who will showcase their research findings.

GCET-2018 is jointly organized by Florida Polytechnic University, Molekule, Inc., and Panjab University, India. The event is a follow up to the first international GCET conference held in Chandigarh, India, last year.

Florida Polytechnic University and Panjab University created the Indo-US partnership with the goal of developing programs to foster the knowledge and research breakthroughs in green chemistry, engineering and technologies that lead to environmental sustainability.

This three-year international collaborative exchange program is funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India and the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) to strengthen collaboration and build partnerships between U.S. and Indian institutions of higher education

Presenter Profile

Michelle Powell serves as the pioneering Risk Manager at Florida Polytechnic University, the state’s sole 100% STEM-dedicated institution. Having been with the university for nearly 11 years, Michelle transitioned from a leadership role in Admissions in October 2023 to establish and evolve the risk management function from the ground up. In this solo capacity, Michelle builds robust frameworks for our dynamic, young university, overseeing our insurance portfolio, consulting on third-party and event risks, and developing critical campus-wide training programs. Michelle has obtained the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) Enterprise Risk Management certificate and the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designations. Her distinct background in mathematics and engineering, combined with extensive higher education leadership, brings an analytical and strategic approach enhancing the institution’s resilience.
