LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Polytechnic University has announced that the Medical Engineering and Robotics Innovation for Tomorrow (merit) program will conclude Thursday evening with a graduation ceremony and presentation of student projects at All Saints Academy in Winter Haven.
For a second summer, the merit program introduced area high school students to high-tech innovations with practical applications at the hands-on, interactive camp.
In June, Florida Polytechnic University partnered with All Saints Academy and Lakeland Regional Health System for the month-long program, which covered 3D printing, neuroimaging, nanotechnology, cancer therapy, robotic surgery and renewable energy.
Students learned from faculty at Florida Polytechnic University, as well as physicians and medical staff at Lakeland Regional Health System. The participants observed firsthand how medical imaging scanners work. They designed and produced projects using the University’s 3D printers. Also, the students built and programmed robots, which they will demonstrate at Thursday’s graduation ceremony.
“This camp enables STEM-focused high school students to benefit from an intensive, hands-on program dedicated to specialized engineering, robotics and innovative technology in medicine,” said Dr. Ghazi Darkazalli, Florida Polytechnic University’s vice president and provost. “We are delighted to partner with All Saints Academy and Lakeland Regional Health System to offer the merit program and open up new horizons for promising students.”
The graduation dinner and ceremony start at 6 p.m., in the Barnett Learning Commons, at All Saints Academy, 5001 SR 540 West, Winter Haven. Students will receive a Certificate of Completion at the ceremony.
