Florida Polytechnic Universitytechnic Professor and Author to Discuss Her Book on Florida Environmentalist

LAKELAND – Florida Polytechnic University Professor Dr. Peggy Macdonald will discuss her new book, “Marjorie Harris Carr: Defender of Florida’s Environment,” at 7 p.m., Jan. 15, at Florida Southern College.

Dr. Macdonald is the invited guest speaker in the next lecture in the Florida Lecture Series, sponsored by the Lawton M. Chiles, Jr., Center for Florida History. The lecture is free and open to the public.

In “Marjorie Harris Carr: Defender of Florida’s Environment, Dr. Macdonald profiles the scientist and environmentalist who led campaigns to protect and restore the Ocklawaha River and stop the draining of Lake Alice in Gainesville. The University Press of Florida published the book in 2014.

Her essay on First Lady Ann Scott will be included in a new collection of biographies about Florida’s First Ladies, and is forthcoming from the University Press of Florida. At Florida Polytechnic University, Dr. Macdonald works as an advisor with the Academic Success Center. She also serves as the University’s Historian.

Session Description: This session will demonstrate that practical risk management is for everyone, regardless of a formal program. Attendees will learn actionable and simple strategies that are easy to implement, enabling them to start immediately by focusing on their top risks to build greater operational resilience and ensure the sustained success of their auxiliary enterprises.

Having been with the university for nearly 11 years, Michelle transitioned from a leadership role in Admissions in October 2023 to establish and evolve the risk management function from the ground up. In this solo capacity, Michelle builds robust frameworks for our dynamic, young university, overseeing our insurance portfolio, consulting on third-party and event risks, and developing critical campus-wide training programs. Michelle has obtained the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) Enterprise Risk Management certificate and the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designations.
