Orlando Tech Association and Orlando Magic host Florida Polytechnic University

September 17, 2018

At the request of the Orlando Regional Tech Association, Florida Polytechnic University President Randy K. Avent had the opportunity to share with area leaders the importance of partnering with the university. The Orlando Magic provided the venue by opening up its Innovation Lab at its corporate headquarters for the August 2018 event.

Avent touched upon on how far Florida Poly has come in just a short period of time, its priorities moving forward and how critical it is for the university to be connected to Florida’s growing tech industry through internships, capstone design projects and career opportunities after graduation.

“The entire reason this university was created was to help grow high-tech industry,” said Avent. “We can develop very good relationships with small and medium-sized businesses that don’t need huge amounts of people because that’s what we’re going to get the biggest growth from.”

Orlando Tech is dedicated to bringing together the brightest minds in technology with leaders across multiple industries to serve the Central Florida region through collaboration and innovation.

“What they’re doing at Florida Poly is impressive. It really is becoming the MIT of Florida,” said Jim Thomas, chief executive officer of Orlando Tech. “I think it’s up to all of us to have this conversation and say ‘how do we then make sure those students Florida Poly is graduating want to stay here and work for all of our companies.’”

Many of the industry representatives on hand for the event were chief information officers, chief technology officers as well as other senior leaders within their companies.
