LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Polytechnic’s robotics team, Purple Fire, impressed the judges during their recent debut at the prestigious VEX Robotics World Championship, held April 25-28 in Louisville, Kentucky.
The team of eight students received the Judges Award, which is presented to the team that the judges decide is deserving of special recognition. The judges consider a number of criteria for this award – exemplary effort and perseverance at the event and team accomplishments throughout the season that may not fall under existing award categories but are worthy of acknowledgment.
Purple Fire also won half of its matches and finished the competition ranked 22nd out of 45 teams from around the world.
“For this being our club’s first time going to the world championship, I would say we did very well,” said Paul Telewick, a senior computer engineering major from Cape Coral, Florida, and president of Florida Poly’s robotics club. “It was a great learning experience.”
The members of Purple Fire had been working toward making it to this year’s VEX Championship since last September.
The VEX Robotics World Championship is organized by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (REC). According to its website, the goal is to provide engaging tech-based programs that foster the technical and interpersonal skills necessary for students to succeed in the 21st Century.
