Senior blends engineering ambition with cultural leadership

Drive and determination are second nature for Kayle Peña Agront, a senior majoring in computer engineering at Florida Polytechnic University.

When not studying, she is gaining experience at her digital engineering internship at Draper, a nonprofit engineering innovation company. Peña is training as a quality engineer in microelectronics at its facility in St. Petersburg, Florida.

“I love it – I enjoy going to work every day and everyone there is so nice,” she said. “Since it’s microelectronics, I get to do things like look at which modules are passing, how to improve our fail rate so we’re making deliveries on time and making sure everything is working correctly.”

It is her third internship, following stints as an engineer intern at C3EL, a Department of Defense contractor, and as a drafter intern at R&S Professional Engineering, a structural engineering firm.

Building on the experience she’s gained from her internships, Peña said her strong sense of identity as a Hispanic woman continues to drive her success both academically and professionally.

“I’m so proud to be who I am and do what I do, and to be a Hispanic woman in STEM is a big part of that,” said Peña, who is vice president of internal affairs for the Florida Poly chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).

Her main role in SHPE focuses on spreading the word about the organization across campus and how it supports students, especially those of Hispanic descent.

“SHPE puts a big emphasis on community and familia. When it started last fall, it made me feel very recognized, like I was really part of something,” said Peña, whose family is from Puerto Rico. “I love the message of building up Hispanics in STEM.”

Peña, who is from Tampa, Florida, is finalizing details for a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration with SHPE’s counterparts at the University’s Latin American Studies Association (LASA), which is also centered on promoting opportunities for Florida Poly’s Hispanic community and sharing elements of Hispanic culture with their peers.

“We have a pretty big mix of Hispanic students on campus, so at this event, we’ll acknowledge who we are as a whole, and we’ll have fun,” Peña said. “It’s going to be a nice break from all the studying and serious stuff.”

The event, which has yet to have a set date, will include salsa dancing, bingo, Hispanic-inspired food, and more. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

“We are here and we’re loud and proud and we’re going to make sure we’re seen,” Peña said. “We’re all about bringing other people to our culture.”

Session Details

This session will demonstrate that practical risk management is for everyone, regardless of a formal program. Attendees will learn actionable and simple strategies that are easy to implement, enabling them to start immediately by focusing on their top risks to build greater operational resilience and ensure the sustained success of their auxiliary enterprises.

Presenter Profile

Michelle Powell serves as the pioneering Risk Manager at Florida Polytechnic University, the state’s sole 100% STEM-dedicated institution. Having been with the university for nearly 11 years, Michelle transitioned from a leadership role in Admissions in October 2023 to establish and evolve the risk management function from the ground up. In this solo capacity, Michelle builds robust frameworks for our dynamic, young university, overseeing our insurance portfolio, consulting on third-party and event risks, and developing critical campus-wide training programs. Michelle has obtained the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) Enterprise Risk Management certificate and the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designations. Her distinct background in mathematics and engineering, combined with extensive higher education leadership, brings an analytical and strategic approach enhancing the institution’s resilience.
