July 29, 2020

As the National Hurricane Center tracks Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, it’s a good time to revisit your personal disaster preparedness plans. The atmospheric disturbance is expected to become Tropical Storm Isaias soon and possibly make landfall in Florida by this weekend.

With a hurricane season that forecasters expect to be busier than normal, these preparations can’t wait. By taking simple steps today, everyone at Florida Polytechnic University can feel assured that they are ready to respond when strong storms approach the area.

The following links will help you prepare and stay informed during the Atlantic hurricane season, which ends on Nov. 30.

Create an emergency kit. The Florida Division of Emergency Management has created a guide to assist you in creating an emergency supplies kit to last you and your family for at least seven days.
Make a plan. Those who have a disaster plan in place can minimize confusion and worry during a hurricane. Forbes has created an extensive checklist that can help you cover all your bases. The Federal Emergency Management Agency also created a template to help with communication during a disaster.
Stay informed. In addition to listening to the battery-operated radio in your emergency kit, it’s important to monitor resources such as the National Weather Service, the National Hurricane Center and other local weather resources. You also can call 211 during a disaster to get information about emergency shelter, food distribution, grief counseling, clean up and more.
