Getting involved on campus is one of the best ways to make friends and find a niche in your college community. There are plenty of good colleges in Florida. We’re going to take time to tell you about Florida’s newest public university, Florida Polytechnic University, and how you can get involved.
Governing Poly Bodies
Adding to the list of good colleges in Florida, Florida Polytechnic University opened for classes in August 2014. The Student Government Association plays a vital role at Florida Poly, helping to oversee the startup of campus clubs and programs at our new University. The SGA has a direct hand in creating the campus culture. After electing the president and other key student leaders, students now are in the process of developing the legislative and judicial branches, and voting on those officers. Once these are established, students will be able to formally establish the Student Government Association, and move forward with approving applications for clubs.
One of the benefits of being a part of Florida Poly’s Inaugural Class is having the opportunity to create new clubs and activities that are tailored to students’ specific interests. Starting a club is rewarding, especially for students looking for a fun way to gain leadership experience.
Activities Abound
At Florida Poly, we’re in the process of developing activities and traditions to create new and exciting events for students. One idea in the works is to have a large scale laser tag battle!
One of the most anticipated events is crowdsourcing the creation of the Florida Poly mascot, which is just getting under way. Students will be able to form small teams, from which they can brainstorm ideas and help facilitate the creation of the mascot, which will represent the University for years to come. Choosing the new mascot will involve the entire campus community. Everyone will have a say!
We also are working on a project that involves the salvaging of the grille from the junkyard car that students were able to relieve stress on during finals week. Students are going to create a “finals graveyard” depicting each grille from the car smashed during each finals week. The name of this graveyard is a work in progress, but students are leaning toward calling it, “The Field of Broken Dreams.” A monument that recognizes the Inaugural Class is in the works near the south end of the lakes as well.
