  3. Were you in any organizations in high school? Yes, I played Volleyball, and was in the Environmental Club
  4. Where did you go to college? I received my Associate of Arts degree from Edison State College and received my bachelor’s degree from Florida Gulf Coast University
  5. Which organizations were you involved in? I was President of the Student Government Association at Edison State College and also was involved in the Student Ambassadors Association.
  6. What did you study? I received my bachelor’s in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations.
  7. Graduation year? I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in 2008.
  8. Any hobbies? In my free time I love to go hiking and play tennis.
  9. Any pets? I have a dog named Murphy who loves to play and is very energetic.
  10. What’s your favorite sports team? Tampa Bay Rays
  11. What do you like to do in your spare time? I love spending time at the beach, shopping and spending time with my friends and family.
  12. What made you want to be a recruiter for Florida Poly? I want to help students choose the right college for them. I think Florida Polytechnic is offering unique degrees and experiences for its students and I am excited to be involved with starting the University.
  13. What do you like about working at Florida Poly so far? Everyone that works here is so helpful and friendly it is a great place to work.
  14. What do you look forward to as you work with Florida Poly? I really enjoy working with students and their parents with the admissions process. It is such an exciting time in their life and I am glad that I can be a part of that!
Session Details

This session will demonstrate that practical risk management is for everyone, regardless of a formal program. Attendees will learn actionable and simple strategies that are easy to implement, enabling them to start immediately by focusing on their top risks to build greater operational resilience and ensure the sustained success of their auxiliary enterprises.

Presenter Profile

Michelle Powell serves as the pioneering Risk Manager at Florida Polytechnic University, the state’s sole 100% STEM-dedicated institution. Having been with the university for nearly 11 years, Michelle transitioned from a leadership role in Admissions in October 2023 to establish and evolve the risk management function from the ground up. In this solo capacity, Michelle builds robust frameworks for our dynamic, young university, overseeing our insurance portfolio, consulting on third-party and event risks, and developing critical campus-wide training programs. Michelle has obtained the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) Enterprise Risk Management certificate and the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designations. Her distinct background in mathematics and engineering, combined with extensive higher education leadership, brings an analytical and strategic approach enhancing the institution’s resilience.
