  6. What did you study? I have a B.A. in Sport Business and a minor in Marketing and Sales

  8. Any hobbies? Disc golf, adult softball leagues, and spending time with my family, friends and six dogs
  9. Any pets? Black-Tri Miniature Australian Shepherd
  10. What’s your favorite sports team? New York Jets and New York Yankees
  11. What do you like to do in your spare time? Relaxing at the beach, exercising, and playing sports
  12. What made you want to be a recruiter for Florida Poly? The opportunity to develop a new university and set the foundation for students to have a successful future as a Florida Polytechnic graduate.
  13. What do you like about working at Florida Poly so far? The staff and faculty are very friendly and approachable. Everyone here has been working very hard to prepare for the first student class to enter in the fall of 2014.
  14. What do you look forward to as you work with Florida Poly? I am looking forward to being a part of the growth and development of the university. I also am looking forward to working with all of the students and cannot wait to see them successfully complete their degrees at Florida Polytechnic University.
Session Details

This session will demonstrate that practical risk management is for everyone, regardless of a formal program. Attendees will learn actionable and simple strategies that are easy to implement, enabling them to start immediately by focusing on their top risks to build greater operational resilience and ensure the sustained success of their auxiliary enterprises.

Presenter Profile

Michelle Powell serves as the pioneering Risk Manager at Florida Polytechnic University, the state’s sole 100% STEM-dedicated institution. Having been with the university for nearly 11 years, Michelle transitioned from a leadership role in Admissions in October 2023 to establish and evolve the risk management function from the ground up. In this solo capacity, Michelle builds robust frameworks for our dynamic, young university, overseeing our insurance portfolio, consulting on third-party and event risks, and developing critical campus-wide training programs. Michelle has obtained the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) Enterprise Risk Management certificate and the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designations. Her distinct background in mathematics and engineering, combined with extensive higher education leadership, brings an analytical and strategic approach enhancing the institution’s resilience.
