Academic Departments

Florida Poly’s academic departments are where the University delivers its core mission.

Each department administers and delivers degree programs, certificates, and other curricula and engages in leading-edge research and industry relations to advance student learning and educational achievement.

Applied Mathematics

Applied Mathematics offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics. In addition, the department offers foundational and advanced coursework that supports all the STEM programs at Florida Poly. The program in applied mathematics covers a breadth of mathematical topics, as well as an interdisciplinary sequence in another STEM field. The degree program is flexible and develops the analytical, theoretical, and technical skills needed for high-tech jobs, as well as for further study in graduate school in a variety of disciplines.

Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences

The Department of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences mission is to explore the intersections between technology, society, and human experience. The Department offers essential coursework where students advance their skills in communication, research, critical thinking, and open-ended, qualitative problems. Courses in writing, such as Composition or Technical Writing, facilitate students’ learning through meta-cognitive self-awareness, reflective practice, and audience identification. These skills support STEM disciplines in terms of user experience, identifying with clients and industry professionals, and documenting code and other technical specifications that impact our lives in various ways including financial, health and safety, and our overall quality of life.

Interim Department Chair:

Civil & Environmental Engineering

Civil and Environmental Engineering at Florida Poly equips students to design and build the infrastructure that shapes communities while protecting the natural world. The program blends strong technical foundations with hands-on projects, preparing graduates to tackle pressing challenges in sustainability, urban development, and resource management. With coursework that spans structural design, water resources, and environmental systems, students gain the analytical and practical skills needed for impactful careers or advanced study. Graduates are ready to innovate where engineering meets society’s greatest needs.

Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science offers the Computer Science program, a high-quality program focused on education and research. This STEM-based program yields highly-skilled graduates who have strong knowledge in the fundamentals of Computer Science and who are able to apply that knowledge to design and implement solutions for arising problems. The program prepares students for clear and concise communication when working in a team environment and for careers in industry, government, and academia.

Data Science & Business Analytics

The Department of Data Science and Business Analytics equips students to harness the power of data through coursework in statistics, computing, artificial intelligence, and business strategy. In addition to building a strong technical foundation, students engage in hands-on projects and interdisciplinary learning that connect classroom knowledge to real-world applications. The program develops the analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills that today’s organizations demand, preparing graduates to drive innovation in technology, finance, healthcare, government, and beyond. Whether pursuing advanced study or entering the workforce, students are ready to lead in a data-driven world.

Electrical, Computer, & Cybersecurity Engineering

The Department of Electrical, Computer, & Cybersecurity Engineering prepares students to design, secure, and power the technologies that drive our modern world. With coursework spanning circuits, embedded systems, digital design, and network defense, the department develops a strong foundation in both hardware and software. Students apply knowledge through labs, projects, and interdisciplinary collaboration, gaining hands-on experience with real-world systems and challenges. The program emphasizes innovation, critical thinking, and technical expertise, equipping graduates with the skills to excel in high-demand industries or to pursue advanced study in engineering and technology fields.

Mechanical & Industrial Engineering

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering empowers students to design, optimize, and improve the systems and technologies that keep the world moving. Coursework integrates principles of mechanics, materials, manufacturing, and operations with hands-on projects that bring theory to life. Students learn to approach challenges from both a technical and systems perspective, preparing them to innovate in areas ranging from robotics and advanced manufacturing to process design and automation. With a focus on problem-solving, creativity, and efficiency, graduates are ready to contribute to high-tech industries or continue their studies at the graduate level.

Physics

The Department of Physics provides a rigorous foundation in the principles that govern the natural world, from the smallest particles to the largest systems in the universe. Students explore classical and modern physics while applying mathematics, computation, and experimentation to solve complex problems. With opportunities for hands-on research, interdisciplinary projects, and collaboration with faculty, students develop strong analytical, theoretical, and technical skills. The program prepares graduates to innovate in high-tech industries, contribute to cutting-edge scientific discovery, or pursue advanced study in physics, engineering, and related fields.
