Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Excellence in Teaching Award is designed to encourage, reward, and publicly acknowledge sustained excellence in teaching by members of the University’s faculty. The award recognizes excellence in teaching practices that reflect the highest standards in pedagogy, a record of outstanding teaching effectiveness within and outside the classroom, the ability to inspire, promote, and sustain the intellectual development of students, course and program development, fostering of critical thinking, and independent inquiry of students.

Nominees must have displayed excellence in teaching by living The Florida Poly Formula in the following areas:

  • Do what’s right for the student
  • Sign your work with pride
  • Go above and beyond
  • Invest in relationships
  • Work on yourself
  • Take intelligent risks

To be eligible, a candidate must hold a full-time faculty position at Florida Polytechnic University, and must have served in that position for a minimum of two full semesters. Self-nominations will be accepted.

A recipient will not be eligible to receive the award again in any of the four years following the year in which they receive an award. Those nominated during a year they are ineligible to win may defer such nominations and apply in the fifth year after the year in which they won, and only with evidence of continued teaching excellence.

Teaching Portfolio
Each nominee who wishes to be considered for the award must provide supporting material to help the Teaching Award Selection Committee evaluate their nomination. This material should be organized carefully in portfolio form and submitted to the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President by Friday, March 1. Portfolios will be forwarded to the Teaching Award Selection Committee for review.

Materials submitted should include:

  • Statement of Teaching Philosophy (Maximum length: three pages)
    A statement of the nominee’s teaching philosophy similar to those typically found in teaching portfolios, job applications, and promotion dossiers. This statement should include summary information about things such as innovative teaching practices, instructional materials developed, new courses developed, major course improvement projects, or grants or awards relating to teaching, that illustrate or exemplify the philosophy.
  • FARE Forms
    FARE forms from both spring 2018 and fall 2018 academic semesters.
  • Letters of Recommendation
    • One recommendation letter from a current Florida Poly faculty or staff member.
    • One recommendation letter from a current Florida Poly student.Letters must not exceed two pages in length.
  • Student Course Evaluation Reports
    The nominee’s SCE executive summary reports from both spring 2018 and fall 2018 academic semesters will be generated by the Institutional Research department. Faculty do not submit this with their portfolio.

All materials should be grouped together into a single PDF document allowing some exception for materials in alternate media, and the entire document should not exceed nine pages.

Award for Excellence in Research

The Excellence in Research Award recognizes and encourages excellence in academic research, creative activity, scholarship, and contributions to expanding knowledge or its application in their field by faculty at Florida Polytechnic University.

Nominations should be based on a record of the past three years of the faculty’s research/scholarly productivity, which is evidenced by items like a recent publication of particularly high-quality; recent receipt of research funding or partnership; patents; sustained industry partnership involving creative work in their technical area; career or other external awards; or other meritorious achievement.

Nominees must have displayed excellence in research by living The Florida Poly Formula in the following areas:

  • Do what’s right for the student
  • Sign your work with pride
  • Go above and beyond
  • Invest in relationships
  • Work on yourself
  • Take intelligent risks

Research Portfolio
Each nominee who wishes to be considered for the award, must provide supporting material to help the Research Award Selection Committee evaluate the quality and impact of their research. This material should be organized carefully and submitted to the Office of the Provost by March 1. This material will be forwarded to the Research Award Selection Committee for consideration.

Materials submitted should include:

  • Research Statement (Maximum length: two pages)
    A research statement prepared by the nominee explaining the objectives of their research or scholarship and its significance. This should address the broad trajectory of their research and how it has impacted (and is expected to impact) either the discipline or society more generally. The language of this statement should be understandable by reviewers outside the field.
  • Bio Sketch (Maximum length: two pages)
    A biographical sketch is required for each candidate. This document should contain listings of professional preparation, academic/professional appointments, products or publications, and up to five synergistic activities. A form will be provided to each candidate for completion of the Bio Sketch.
  • FARE Forms
    FARE forms from both spring 2018 and fall 2018 academic semesters.
  • Letters of Review
    A minimum of two, but no more than three letters of review from colleagues (from academia or industry and community partners as appropriate to the work) supporting the quality of the nominee’s research and scholarly activities. Letters may not exceed two pages in length, and at least one letter must be from a Florida Polytechnic University colleague.

All materials must be grouped together into a single PDF document allowing some exception for materials in alternate media, and the entire document should not exceed 12 pages.

Award for Exemplary Service to Others

This award recognizes staff, faculty, and/or a university department whose service has consistently made a significant positive impact within their department, the University as a whole, with students, or with external stakeholders. The nomination can be based on an extraordinary service (such as an event, project, program, or activity) or simply an overall attitude of service. They are an exemplary colleague and universally recognized resource and co-worker who provides the highest quality of service to the Florida Poly community.

Nominees must have consistently performed in an exemplary manner exceeding the expectations of their position, should demonstrate commitment to the mission of the University, and reflect service excellence by living The Florida Poly Formula in the following areas:

  • Find a way
  • Go above and beyond
  • Be willing to sweep the floors
  • Simplify everything
  • Practice blameless problem-solving
  • Be one Florida Poly

Phoenix Spirit Award

This award recognizes employees who consistently demonstrate a genuine interest in others and are a continual source of encouragement in a positive and inclusive manner to coworkers and students at Florida Poly. They help others by sharing knowledge of the institution’s practices, values and culture. At the end of the day, they make others feel that they belong to the Florida Poly community. They exhibit a positive attitude and a spirit of leadership through their actions, whether big or small.

Nominees must have consistently performed in an exemplary manner, exceeding the expectations of their position, and should demonstrate commitment to the mission of the University and reflect an entrepreneurial spirit by living The Florida Poly Formula in the following areas:

  • Be a brand ambassador
  • Be positive
  • Invest in relationships
  • Be all in
  • Show meaningful appreciation
  • Be one Florida Poly

Pinnacle Award

This award is the highest honor a Florida Polytechnic University employee can receive. Consideration of names are welcome through online nomination. The University President and his Cabinet select the award recipient.

People who rise to the top do so through hard work, commitment, and excellence. Their success is defined by service and a generosity of spirit. They lead by example, live by the 27 fundamentals of The Florida Poly Formula, and have a lasting impact in whatever they do. They elevate the people around them, the communities in which they live, the divisions in which they work and the customers whom they serve. In doing so, they bring honor to Florida Poly as a member of the university family.

This award recognizes an individual staff and/or faculty member who has:

  • Made a significant impact on the University through demonstration of competence, dedication, outstanding performance, problem-solving, customer service and ingenuity;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the University’s core purpose and The Florida Poly Formula;
  • Exceptional ability to foster collaboration, communication, and cooperation among colleagues and University constituents;
  • Performed at a level above and beyond normal job requirements
