Dr. Athanasios Gentimis

Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Dr. Athanasios (Thanos) Gentimis is a newly appointed Assistant Professor of Math and Analytics at Florida Polytechnic University. His field of expertise is Algebraic Topology, with a special interest in Geometric Group Theory. “Florida Polytechnic is a great opportunity for me, as I will be both teaching and conducting research while benefitting from the University’s advanced technological support as well as sharing knowledge with other faculty from various disciplines,” he said.

Dr. Gentimis received a Ph.D. in Theoretical Mathematics from the University of Florida. His dissertation was titled: “Properties of Groups at Infinity.” Dr. Gentimis earned his master’s degree in Theoretical Mathematics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, where he also received his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Education.

Most recently, he worked as a postdoctoral research assistant in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at North Carolina State University. Parallel to that, he was a member of the Lab of Analytical Science at NCSU. “My recent work revolves around applications of Topological Data Analysis in Signal Processing, Coverage Networks, Social Networks and Big Data Analysis. I am also interested in purely abstract results related to the new and growing field of Computational Topology,” he noted.

Dr. Gentimis is knowledgeable in several computer programming/technical languages that include C++, FORTRAN, Python and MATLAB. He is fluent in Greek (his native tongue), English, French (conversational) and Ancient Greek. He enjoys playing chess, and holds the Greek Elo rating of 1880 as a competitive player.
