Dr. Grisselle Centeno, a professor at Florida Polytechnic University, is featured on the cover of the July 2021 edition of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. The reputable nationwide publication is exclusively dedicated to providing news and information about issues concerning diversity in American higher education.
With the headline “Leading by Example,” the magazine features an article on Centeno’s background and her commitment to encouraging more women to pursue engineering and other STEM careers. The piece also spotlights Florida Poly’s new Health Systems Engineering program, which is directed by Centeno and it’s the first of its kind in the state of Florida.
“The idea is to make women aware that you can work in health care, but you do not have to be a nurse,” Centeno said in the article. “You do not have to be an anesthesiologist. You can be an engineer. You can be a data scientist. You can be a data analyst and work for health care and be a contributor there.”
Centeno was born and raised in Puerto Rico and joined Florida Poly in 2019 as a professor in the Data Science and Business Analytics Department.
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education has been covering diversity in education for 37 years. The publication launched in 1984 as Black Issues in Higher Education, focusing on issues pertaining to African Americans in higher education. The magazine was renamed in 2005 to better reflect inclusivity and the country’s changing demographics.
