Lorraine Laguerre Van Sickle joined Florida Polytechnic University in the fall of 2024 as a chemistry instructor. She previously worked at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, during the 2023-2024 academic year. In that role, she taught general chemistry one and two, and lectures and labs for analytical and instrumental chemistry. She also was responsible for designing real-world application experiments for the instrumentation lab, including the creation and 3D printing of a fluorimeter.
In addition to Laguerre Van Sickle’s experience in analytical chemistry research, her thesis centered on chemistry education research. She investigated various factors contributing to student success in introductory chemistry courses, including study habits, academic mindset and a sense of social belonging.
Laguerre Van Sickle can often be found at a movie theater when she’s not inside the classroom or the lab. The enthusiastic cinephile and her husband make it a point to visit the theater at least once a week to enjoy a diverse range of films. She also is passionate about outdoor activities such as climbing, hiking and camping.
