Prepare today for hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season is just getting started, and Florida Poly wants to make sure you’re ready. Preparing now will make it easier to handle potentially treacherous conditions as the first named storms of the year begin forming.

Taking simple steps today can prevent stress, worry, and dangerous conditions if a hurricane strikes our area. The following tips and links can help you prepare for hurricane season, which ends Nov. 30.

  • Sign up or update your Florida Poly Alerts contact information to receive important messages if a hurricane or other serious event could affect Florida Poly.
  • Create an emergency kit. The Florida Division of Emergency Management has created a guide to assist you in creating an emergency supplies kit to last you and your family for at least seven days.
  • Make a plan. Those who have a disaster plan in place can minimize confusion and worry during a hurricane. The Naples Daily News has created an extensive checklist that can help you cover all your bases. The Federal Emergency Management Area also created a template to help with communication during a disaster.
  • Stay informed. In addition to listening to the battery-operated radio in your emergency kit, it’s important to monitor resources such as the National Weather Service, the National Hurricane Center and other local weather resources. You also can call 211 during a disaster to get information about emergency shelter, food distribution, grief counseling, clean up and more.
